Aged Care Volunteers ACVVS Volunteers Scheme

Aged care volunteers - what is the ACVVS Volunteer Scheme?

As of the 1st of July 2023, The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) replaced the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS). The ACVVS aims to provide a free resource for older Australians, particularly those at risk of being socially isolated, that connects them with volunteers.

Sourcing volunteers

When you sign up for the ACVVS, you’ll be matched with a volunteer who shares your interests, language, or cultural background. Whether it’s having a chat, sharing a hobby, or engaging in an activity you enjoy, your volunteer is there to provide meaningful companionship.

Tailored Matches: The ACVVS ensures you’re paired with someone who speaks your language or shares your cultural background. Whether you prefer to get out and about, enjoy gardening, or love to chat, the program will match you with someone who compliments your personality and interests.

Support Beyond Social Interaction: Your volunteer can engage you in your favourite pastimes, help combat loneliness, and be someone you can talk to about your thoughts and feelings.

If you’re feeling isolated or lonely, this is a chance to reconnect with your community and heritage through personalised volunteer visits.

Why use the ACVVS?

Studies show that the ACVVS has a significant impact on the mental and emotional well-being of older Australians, especially those receiving a Home Care Package. Regular interactions with a friendly volunteer can reduce stress, alleviate loneliness, and help you regain a sense of belonging.

With over 140 community organisations funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care, the ACVVS gives you access to trained volunteers from a range of backgrounds, including aged care professionals, health experts, and even family and friends.

Aged care providers’ role

Aged care providers play a crucial role in connecting you to the ACVVS. Your provider can inform you about the service and help you access it, ensuring that you’re paired with a volunteer who can enrich your life and help you achieve your goals.

Providers are committed to ensuring that your volunteer match is a good fit for you, making sure the time you spend together is fulfilling and enjoyable.

ACVVS volunteers’ role

Volunteers are at the heart of the ACVVS. They’re required to visit care recipients at least 20 times a year, and during each visit, they can spend time with you in a way that suits you best—whether it’s playing cards, going for a walk, or simply having a conversation.

These visits provide more than just companionship—they can offer support, foster friendships, and improve your quality of life.

ACVVS volunteer managers’ role

ACVVS volunteer managers (Auspice Coordinators) are the key link between Home Care Package Providers and volunteers. They work to ensure that your experience is smooth and enjoyable.

If you have any concerns about your volunteer or your experience with the service, your volunteer manager is available to provide support and address any issues.

Accessing the service

The ACVVS is an important service that provides much-needed social care to older Australians who have a Home Care Package. If, at any time, you feel isolated or lonely, organising a friendly volunteer is only a phone call away.

The scheme is a great opportunity for you to connect with similar people and make new friends.

For more information on the ACVVS, visit this site or contact your Home Care Package Provider. Trilogy Care can also refer you if you’d like, just ask your care partner about the ACVVS program.
