Resilience on and off the field: From cricket to home care

When I think back on my cricketing days, what stands out most isn’t the wins or the records. It’s the hard days. The rebuilding years. The times we were written off but still found a way to stay in the fight - writes Allan Border, Trilogy Care Ambassador.

That’s what resilience means to me: staying steady even when things get tough. It’s a value I see every day in the work Trilogy Care does, helping older Australians stay strong, independent and in control of their care at home.

When I captained the Australian Test team in the 1980s, we were going through a big shift. We didn’t have the stars we once had. We had to rebuild, back ourselves, and focus on doing the basics well. Bit by bit, through discipline and belief, we got there.

It reminds me of what many older Australians face today. Life changes. Your needs change. And you have to adjust, plan, and stay confident in the people around you. That’s where a supportive team makes all the difference.

At Trilogy Care, the team works alongside you so you can make the decisions that matter most - who supports you, when they come, and what they do. It’s your life, and you’re the captain of your own care. Trilogy Care’s role is to make sure you’ve got the right team and the right tools behind you.

Over the years, I’ve learned that real strength is quiet. It’s the determination to keep showing up and to keep moving forward. I see that same spirit in clients who self-manage their Support at Home packages. People taking charge, setting their own pace, and making their funding go further through smart choices and fair rates.

When I visit Trilogy Care clients, I hear stories that would make any Australian proud. People finding creative ways to stay in their homes longer, hiring workers they trust, and making their budgets stretch through choice and control.

One client told me recently, “It feels good to have the reins in my hands again.” That’s what this is all about - dignity, independence and the freedom to live life on your terms.

Resilience doesn’t mean doing everything on your own. It often means leaning on the people who care about you - your family, your friends and the support team around you. Many Trilogy clients have their families actively involved in their care, helping them make decisions and giving them confidence to stay at home safely. That partnership between clients, families and the Trilogy team is what true resilience looks like. Staying strong together, with everyone playing their part.

So if you’re navigating the changes under Support at Home, don’t be afraid to ask questions, understand your options and make choices that suit you. That’s what self-management with Trilogy Care is all about.

Because in cricket, and in life, it’s not about how many times you’re knocked down. It’s about getting back up, knowing you’ve got a strong team behind you, and staying true to your game plan.
